Cold forging is generally processed at room temperature, while hot forging is above the recrystallization temperature of the billet metal. Forging is sometimes in a heated state, but when the temperature does not exceed the recrystallization temperature, it is called temperature forging. However, this division is not completely uniform in production.

Free forging is a kind of processing method which puts the heated metal blank on the forging equipment and between the iron in the lower part, and applies impact force or pressure to directly make the blank produce plastic deformation, so as to obtain the forging required. Free forging is suitable for the production of single piece, small batch and heavy forgings due to its simple shape and flexible operation.
